History of Oregon First Community Credit Union

In 1956, Frank Walsh, a young teacher, and a few of his colleagues began talking of forming a credit union to gain easier access to credit. They drove to Portland to find out more about this "cooperative bank" and liked what they discovered. In January of 1957, 12 school employees from the south coast met in Bandon and formed Coos Curry Teachers Federal Credit Union, now Oregon First Community Credit Union. More than 50 years later, with 23 banking centers and 35 thousand members, it is doubtful that any of them imagined what would come of their efforts.

Several months after the credit union's formation, Clyde Head, a Coquille math teacher, was asked to serve as Manager/Treasurer. Soon, his wife, Barbara, began helping and quickly became an integral part of the credit union. Barbara and Clyde were the heart and soul of the credit union, managing it from their Coquille home for the first eight years and until Clyde's retirement in 1989. In 1965, the first office was purchased in Coquille and the credit union officially moved out of the Head's home. That was only the beginning.

At Oregon First, we are proud of our humble beginnings and the legacy forged by those credit union pioneers. We have adopted the credit union motto, "Not for profit, not for charity, but for service," and we strive to put people before profits in everything we do. As a financial cooperative, service to our membership is our singular objective. Out of this philosophy springs our mission statement; "We build lasting relationships through personalized financial services".

Oregon First Community Credit Union has been serving Oregonians since 1957. We are a member-owned financial cooperative, currently operating 23 banking centers throughout Oregon, and we are open to everyone in the community. The credit union offers a full array of financial products and services to consumers and small businesses; delivered by local professionals and through convenient technology.
